Harrison

The Harrison-Langston intersection is a vibrant hub of commercial activity.  Always lively, the hub’s shopping centers host a dizzying array of dining, retail, shopping, and activities.  Sample mouth-watering food from nearly every corner of the planet, give yourself—or your pet—a makeover, select unique gifts from longstanding businesses, or even learn a new dance or self-defense move in some of the hub’s lively studios.  And just steps away from the commercial centers are acres of parks complete with modern playground equipment, enjoyable water features, and shady trees.  Not far is the LAC Studios, where you tap into your inner artist to craft unique ceramics and prints.

Green Spaces

Majestic, leafy trees tower over two neighborhood parks—Chestnut Hills and Big Walnut—that residents rightfully consider hidden gems. In addition to the shade (so welcome on those hot summer days), the parks boast playground equipment for children of all ages—including some of the tallest slides in the area. Chestnut Hill’s seasonal water feature flowing into a delightful sand pit is a favorite of the young and the young at heart.

Commemorating Civil Rights History

On June 10, 1960 at the Lee Harrison Drug Fair (now the Mattress Firm) lunch counter, a sit-in was staged to protest the widespread segregation policies at the time. From 2019 to 2022, Arlington Arts visiting artist Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. worked to bring awareness to Arlington’s civil rights history with a focus on the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of Stratford Junior High School (2019) and the 60th anniversary of the lunch counter sit-ins (2020).
