The PEOPLE AND PLACES PROJECT is not just a celebration, but a crucial effort to preserve the rich cultural heritage found along the Langston Boulevard corridor. In conjunction with Arlington County, LBA is collecting the stories of local people and locations that have played an important role in defining our shared sense of place in the communities along the corridor. This will include community leaders, historical figures, community and social groups, civic activists, and legacy businesses, to list a few. Our goal is to use community knowledge to collect and archive these stories so that our shared histories, experiences, and culture can be preserved for generations to come. This is an urgent and important task that we must all undertake, so we ask for your help identifying our most important people and places.
LEGACY BUSINESSES
Cornerstones of the Community
Our first subjects in the People & Places Project are the legacy businesses found along Langston Boulevard. We define legacy businesses as those that have been in business continuously for at least 25 years along the corridor and have contributed to the growth and heritage of the community. Why did we choose legacy businesses first? These businesses help define our sense of community and place. They provide unique and authentic services and products. Many of these businesses are multi-generational and are both symbols and caretakers of our community’s history and heritage. It is important that we highlight these businesses in hopes of keeping them in the community for years to come.

We started with ten businesses. Each of these businesses has deep ties to the community and important stories to tell. This was not meant to be a comprehensive list but a starting point. Some well-known legacy businesses like Mr. Moore’s Barbershop and Heidelberg Pastry Shop have already been featured through previous work, so they will not be featured here at this time. We are looking for the community’s help to identify other legacy businesses that we should feature in the future.
