Enriching arts and cultural experiences

Art enriches our lives—seeing specially made bricks along a historic walkway, listening to a concert by local musicians, envisioning new public art for a Langston retail area. Quality art also boosts economic development and can enhance the overall attractiveness of Langston Boulevard.

Use art to help create a distinctive and engaging sense of place.

To raise the quality and character of publicly-accessible spaces calls for artistic thinking and creative excellence in design. Public spaces in all Langston Blvd. hubs should be designed to support that distinctive sense of place and opportunity for social interaction. Funding and coordination can come through Arlington capital improvement projects (CIP), as well as private development as part of the site plan process.

Partner with local arts.

Partner with local arts organizations, artists and community organizations to develop and present exhibitions, performances and individual artworks. Encourage diversity of venues, of artists, and of art itself. To ensure that equity is more than a buzzword, leaders must ensure art is infused into every neighborhood, every hub along Langston Blvd., in ways that connect with residents and support the broader creative economy. Arts and culture can spark accessible, inclusive opportunities for lifelong learning and discovery.

Support economic development and personal growth through the arts.

Community arts and culture are sustainable economic development assets that can aid in the attraction and retention of businesses and workforce. This concept can be broadened and intertwined, for instance, by making early connections with nearby students and schools along Langston Blvd. Art provides a path toward individual enrichment, with access to art experiences that enrich us as individuals and offer new perspectives on our community and cultural awareness.

Support and work toward a sustainable and evolving arts and culture ecosystem.

At the western end of Langston Blvd. stands LAC, for many years a fully equipped professional studio for artists working in ceramics and printmaking. The Center housed a mini-gallery, and offered master workshops and an annual show and sale. While such services are scheduled to be relocated elsewhere in Arlington, a need still exists for spaces to celebrate, encourage and incubate the work of local artists.
