Langston Blvd. Presidents' Breakfast

President_Breakfast_Winter_2025

The Langston Boulevard Presidents' Breakfasts bring together the 18 civic associations to discuss corridor-wide issues and build shared understanding on them. This gathering continues a tradition that was instrumental in starting the Langston Blvd Alliance (LBA) many years ago. Regular meetings among the key neighborhood leaders explored ways to make Langston Blvd. (then Lee Hwy) better suited for evolving needs and challenges, such as environmental sustainability.

In 2025, priority issues of the Presidents’ Breakfast Group include:

UPCOMING DATES:

January 15, 2025
Community Center Committee Meeting
6:00 pm, LBA, 4500 Langston Blvd.

February 12, 2025
Transportation Committee Meeting
6:00 pm, LBA, 4500 Langston Blvd.

  • Transportation/Pedestrian Safety/CIP

Committee (Top Priority). VDOT ownership of Langston Blvd. sometimes collides with realizing the vision of the boulevard, such as lowering speed limits and increasing pedestrian safety. This committee’s work includes exploring ownership of Langston Boulevard by the County instead of VDOT. Understanding the complexities, pros, and cons involved is a first step, including consideration of the ease of making safety improvements. In the past, the County has taken control of VDOT of roadways Columbia Pike and Fairfax Drive. The committee will consider lessons learned from such changes.

Another important aspect of transportation improvements is pressing for sufficient funding to achieve needed improvements—and in a timely fashion. The County’s Capital Improvement Plan must be a substantial contributor to making such improvements.

  • Community Centers

Committee (Top Priority). This work addresses planning for the future of all Community Centers along Langston Blvd. (currently Dawson Terrace, Langston Brown and LAC, formerly known as the Lee Arts Center), with attention to equity among all geographic locations. Current work has focused on the effort to preserve and re-imagine the LAC.

  • Retail

(up next after Community Centers and Transportation Committees are going full steam). Issues include supporting existing businesses and navigating a complicated PLB retail plan.

  • Stormwater

(Support Spout Run Work Group). The Spout Run Watershed Work Group has involved multiple civic associations in planning for remediation of vexing problems caused by uncontrolled stormwater. But there is not yet a clear implementation plan that meshes that work with Plan Langston Blvd.

The Presidents’ Breakfast Group has been instrumental in expanding community engagement and clear communication in the past. With Plan Langston Boulevard now approved and development projects beginning to emerge, the group’s on-the-ground role is ever more important.
